Abstract
We provide updated distributional information for species of the Lampropeltis mexicana group, an assemblage of colorful snakes occurring throughout northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. We generated point locality maps based on 685 records supported by vouchered specimens. The ranges of constituent species are characterized by allopatry, although some species pairs are nearly parapatric. In light of our improved knowledge of the distribution of these taxa, we review the historical taxonomy of the mexicana group, provide partial synonymies, and present morphology-based diagnoses for each species. We recognize six species as accurately reflecting biodiversity. The conservation status of each of these species is reviewed in the context of new distributional data and in consideration of our revised taxonomy. We identify range gaps as important targets for future surveys.
